Thermoplastic polyurethanes, usually abbreviated as TPU, are notoriously difficult to bond. Design engineers often face the challenge of finding an appropriate adhesive for these materials. This challenge is especially common for medical device applications, where TPUs are widely used. With this in mind, Master Bond has developed a new UV curing adhesive, UV17Med, that passes ISO 10993-5 for cytotoxicity. It is formulated with a proprietary blend of ingredients for the effective bonding of TPUs.
UV17Med’s T-peel strength was tested on nine different types of TPU films sourced from two suppliers. All nine types of TPU exhibited strong bonds to UV17Med. Five of them were impossible to peel off without resulting in substrate failure.* This highly flowable adhesive is notable for having a low tensile modulus, high elongation, and good dimensional stability.
Here you can see the TPU bonded with a generic UV curable adhesive material. The TPU bonded with generic material peels off immediately. When the TPU is bonded using the UV17Med, complete substrate failure occurs, with both strips of the TPU being destroyed.
